MCC Conveys Annual Student Awards

On April 23rd MCC celebrated its best and brightest as the College community came together to present its annual academic awards. Trustees, faculty and families were on hand to recognize top performers in the Career and College Promise Programs, Continuing Education, Arts and Sciences, Career and Technical Education, Gunsmithing, Health and Human Services, Club Awards and the MCC Legend Awards. Students Ricky Merida Nieves and Alaysia Britton addressed award recipients and guests with inspiring messages. MCC Welcomes New PTK Members for 2026

Thirty-seven Montgomery Community College students were inducted into the college’s Beta Xi Omicron chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor society on April 23rd. Family and friends were in attendance to celebrate the occasion. The purpose of PTK is to promote scholarship, the development of leadership and service, and the cultivation of fellowship among qualified students. This year’s Inductees have worked hard to meet the eligibility for PTK, completing at least 12 semester hours of associate degree general education coursework with a grade point average of 3.5. Annual MCC Foundation Awards

The MCC Foundation Board awarded its Humanitarian of the Year and Fundraiser/Friendraiser of the Year Awards at its February 2026 meeting. Award recipients were on hand to receive personal thank-yous in addition to commemorative pottery gifts crafted by members of MCC’s Heritage Crafts Program. The Humanitarian Award is given to the individual or group which most exemplifies a spirit of goodwill and generosity not only to the benefit of Montgomery Community College, but the community at large. Meet Wendy Grissom, Life-Long Learner

Wendy Grissom is a dedicated nursing instructor at Montgomery Community College (MCC), a Phi Theta Kappa Student Advisor and a nationally Certified Nurse Educator (CNE). A native of Sanford, North Carolina, Wendy attended Lee Senior High School before beginning her nursing journey at Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, where she earned her Associate Degree in Nursing. She went on to complete her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Fayetteville State University and later earned her Master of Science in Nursing Education from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. MCC Competes in Cradle Competition 2025

The Montgomery Community College Forestry Club competed at the 35th Annual John G. Palmer Intercollegiate Woodsman’s Meet, held at the Cradle of Forestry in the Pisgah National Forest. This year’s competition brought together forestry students from across the eastern United States, including Montgomery Community College, Haywood Community College, Penn State Mont Alto, North Carolina State University, Western Carolina University, West Virginia University and Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. The annual competition tests participants in a range of technical, physical and academic forestry skills. MCC Student Awarded Life Science Scholarship

Michael Butcher, a Facility Maintenance Technology student at Montgomery Community College, has been awarded one of three Samuel M. Taylor Memorial Life Sciences Scholarships for 2025-2026. This prestigious educational scholarship will allow him to develop the industry-critical skills required to succeed in the biotechnology and life sciences fields.  Mr. Art Furr, MCC’s Electrical Systems Technology/Industrial Systems Technology Department Chair, alerted Michael to the scholarship opportunity. “Mr. Furr told me about it in class one day, it sounded like a perfect match, and he helped to proofread my application before I submitted it,” explains Michael. For the first time in its history, Montgomery Community College is proud to announce one of its students is the recipient of a mikeroweWORKS Foundation’s Work Ethic Scholarship. As an apprentice on the TV series Dirty Jobs, Mike Rowe traveled to every state and worked with plumbers, electricians, steamfitters, pipefitters, brick layers, farmers, fishers, and other skilled workers. Each year, his Foundation provides scholarships through the Work Ethic Scholarship Program to help students get trained for skilled jobs that are in demand. MCC Recognizes its Annual Scholarship Recipients

On August 26th, around 60 Montgomery Community College students received financial awards from the very special people and organizations who endow scholarships at the College. Students and their donors were able to meet each other in person during a ceremony and post-event reception. One hundred eleven scholarships were awarded, totaling over $160,000. The evening began with the presentation of merit awards, which are scholarships based on a student’s performance in their program and recommendations from their instructors.  The next group of awards, in its third year, were scholarships awarded to continuing education students through an established endowed fund. MCC Celebrates its 2025 BLET Grads

On May 20, eight Basic Law Enforcement Training students celebrated their graduation from MCC’s BLET program! Kameron Robert Clark, Denando Lemar Ewings, Courtney Paige Heaton, Remi Alain Lamoureux, Erica Denise Lemonds, Zachary Mashburn, Juliana Thrower McRae and Heather Marie Phouangphrachanh received their certificates of completion with family members, college administration and trustees in attendance. MCC also welcomed sponsoring agencies, law enforcement guests, instructors, volunteers and alumni of the program. The night’s opening prayer was provided by Allen Mashburn, Pastor of Asbury Baptist Church, and the guest speaker was Arthur Donadio, Assistant District Attorney for Montgomery and Stanly Counties. The evening’s benediction was provided by Pete Herron, Sheriff of Montgomery County.
