MCC Competes in Cradle Competition 2026

The Montgomery Community College Forestry Club competed at the 36th Annual John G. Palmer Intercollegiate Woodsman’s Meet, held at the Cradle of Forestry in the Pisgah National Forest. This year’s competition brought together forestry students from across the eastern United States, including Montgomery Community College, Haywood Community College, North Carolina State University and Penn State Mont-Alto.

The annual competition tests participants in a range of technical, physical and academic forestry skills. Events included precision sawing, dendrology, orienteering, log rolling, pole felling, and Quiz Bowl — all designed to showcase the teamwork, knowledge and field skills vital to future forestry professionals.

MCC’s Forestry Club delivered an impressive performance across multiple events, earning some top honors and demonstrating the strength of its hands-on training program. The team’s results included:

First place honors in Archery went to Camden Brown. First place is Men’s Singlebuck went to Charlie Kearns. First place in Women’s Crosscut went to AJ Abbott and Alanna Gloster.

Second Place Men’s Pole Climb went to Charlie Kearns. AJ Abbot places second in Women’s Bolt Split. Women’s Singlebuck second place finisher was Alanna Gloster. Ridge Meadows, Mark Knipp, Eric Millson and Alanna Gloster placed second in Quiz Bowl.

Third place winners include Alanna Gloster for Orienteering, with third place for Pulp Toss for Accuracy went to Ridge Meadows, AJ Abbott, Eric Millson, Camden Brown, Andrew Neilsen and Mark Knipp.

Even Josh Hussey, Department Chair of Forest Management Technology, Career & Technical Education got in on the action, with a third place finish in the Alumni Chop!

The Woodsman’s Meet is always a great opportunity for MCC students to test their skills against other top forestry programs and build connections in the forestry community. Our students worked hard to prepare, and their success reflects both their dedication and the quality of our forestry program.
