On August 25th, over 50 Montgomery Community College students will receive financial awards from the very special people and organizations who endow scholarships at the College. Students and their donors will meet each other in person during a ceremony and post-event reception. Over 100 scholarships will be awarded, totaling over $75,000.
The evening will begin with the presentation of merit awards, which are scholarships based on a student’s performance in their program and recommendations from their instructors.
The next group of awards, in its fourth year, are scholarships awarded to continuing education students through an established endowed fund. This scholarship assists continuing education students taking classes in a variety of programs including, phlebotomy, taxidermy, gunsmithing, welding and more.
The next group of scholarships celebrates the Montgomery Scholars Program, providing recent Montgomery County high school graduates with a scholarship to MCC. These two-year scholarships cover tuition and fees and $250 towards books for this academic year and the next. This program continues to grow each year, not only from the number of students attending, but also from the generous donors who contribute to support this very worthwhile initiative.
The final group of scholarships are based on financial need. All MCC scholarships are maintained and distributed through the MCC Foundation, making tuition, books and fees affordable for students.
“Scholarship Night is one of the most significant events we host on our campus,” explains Susanna Kornegay, director of MCC’s Foundation. “It means so much for our donors to “put a name with a face” as they personally meet the student who is receiving the scholarship they have funded. It is also an opportunity for the student realize they have someone very important and generous in their corner, rooting them on.”
Student attendance at the event is one of the eligibility criteria to receive a scholarship. “Showing gratitude and appreciation for these life-changing gifts is a basic courtesy, and one our donors certainly deserve,” said Kornegay.
