MCC Launches Gunsmithing Apprenticeship

Montgomery Community College has affirmed its commitment to providing hands-on learning opportunities that will meet workforce needs through employer-sponsored apprenticeships. The college was recently granted provisional approval to offer registered apprenticeships in collaboration with the US Dept. of Labor, ApprenticeshipNC, and the NC Community College System. The Registered apprenticeship program allows students to receive paid training while learning a skillset unique to a local employer. In turn, apprenticeships provide the host employer a pipeline of potential employees that have received training in the precise skills required by the company. Chase Stephens Works

For the first time in its history, Montgomery Community College is proud to announce one of its students is the recipient of a mikeroweWORKS Foundation’s Work Ethic Scholarship. As an apprentice on the TV series Dirty Jobs, Mike Rowe traveled to every state and worked with plumbers, electricians, steamfitters, pipefitters, brick layers, farmers, fishers, and other skilled workers. Each year, his Foundation provides scholarships through the Work Ethic Scholarship Program to help students get trained for skilled jobs that are in demand. Colin Bryant hails from Taylorsville, North Carolina located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Alexander County is a rural community with plenty of outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing and ample space to shoot guns. Colin’s grandfather, Patrick Bryant, after retiring as a flight deck Safety Chief aboard the USS Enterprise, became a gunsmith in Memphis, Tennessee. He made one of the first rifles Colin ever shot at age five. Colin continued his affinity for firearms through scouting where he learned the fundamentals of marksmanship and safety. After graduating from Alexander Central High School in 2019, Colin enrolled at Appalachian State University. For many reasons, Colin really struggled. He
