NC Community Colleges and UnitedHealthcare Announce Scholarship Program at MCC

Montgomery Community College is proud to announce its participation in the UnitedHealthcare “Future Leaders in Health” scholarship program, a new initiative aimed at training the next generation of rural healthcare professionals. North Carolina is currently facing a healthcare crisis, with nearly three million residents living in areas without adequate medical professionals. Rural counties are hit the hardest, often operating with half the number of providers per capita compared to urban areas. Projections show that by 2033, the state is expected to face shortfalls of over 12,500 registered nurses and 5,000 licensed practical nurses. Meet Wendy Grissom, Life-Long Learner

Wendy Grissom is a dedicated nursing instructor at Montgomery Community College (MCC), a Phi Theta Kappa Student Advisor and a nationally Certified Nurse Educator (CNE). A native of Sanford, North Carolina, Wendy attended Lee Senior High School before beginning her nursing journey at Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, where she earned her Associate Degree in Nursing. She went on to complete her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Fayetteville State University and later earned her Master of Science in Nursing Education from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. MCC Pins Its 2025 Nursing Classes

Eighteen students, thirteen with an Associate Degree in Nursing and five from the Practical Nursing program, received a commemorative pin and a nurse’s candle to remember their accomplishments. Beaman, MCC Excellence in Teaching Award Winner, is a State Finalist

Ms. Amanda Beaman, winner of this year’s Excellence in Teaching Award at Montgomery Community College, placed in the top three for the honor across all 58 of North Carolina’s community colleges! Beaman is a graduate of MCC with an Associate in Applied Science degree. She has worked for the College since 2005, and is currently the Department Chair of Medical Assisting and Phlebotomy.
