Germain is a student in Mr. Taylor Mitchell’s welding classes. He has completed the Basic Welding/Cutting Certificate and is currently working toward his Mig Certificate. Germain is ahead of schedule; he is already working on 3F Mig after two weeks, a position and process that usually takes students a full 16-week semester to reach!
Germain chose the Welding Technology Program because welding and fabrication have always interested him. “I would like to have a job in welding someday,” explains Germain. “I really enjoy practicing. I like listening to the theory and then putting it into practice. I also took the program for personal growth and self-improvement. Welding, at least in my case, is a discipline where I feel I am improving every day.”
Instructor Taylor Mitchell agrees. “Germain is punctual and eager to learn. He is constantly asking for input on his welds and learns very quickly. While Germain’s first language is Spanish, he is also studying English. For many, it would be a significant barrier to learning from me, a non-Spanish-speaking instructor! But Germain is driven and seeks out every opportunity to learn about this trade, taking diligent notes and asking for translation when needed.”
Germain says his dream career would be to work as an underwater welder, which is a high-risk, high-reward profession. He is also interested in operating his own metalworking shop. “I would really recommend technical training at a community college,” says Germain. “MCC is providing me many opportunities to improve myself and move forward in life. Most importantly, learning is a matter of overcoming your fears and giving things a try!”
As Germain moves through the Welding Technology Program, he will continue to advance at a steady pace, requesting more challenging tasks. Instructor Taylor Mitchell is expecting great things from Germain, as a student and beyond his time at MCC “It is a pleasure to teach him and see what a driven, motivated person can truly accomplish.”
