A learning management system (LMS) is a central platform for teaching and learning. An LMS is used by all faculty and students at MCC; it provides course information, assignments, grades, communication and learning resources. MCC is implementing a new LMS called Canvas.

Canvas is a common LMS across North Carolina, already in use in all public K-12 schools. The North Carolina Community College System established a state-wide contract with Canvas last year, which will help foster familiarity and continuity for students as they move into higher education environments.
The Canvas conversion began in March 2026 with a small group of faculty who were selected to move their courses first and be an additional point of contact over the remainder of the year. In most cases, an LMS conversion takes about 18 months, but MCC is doing theirs in about nine. MCC is nearing the end of transition phase, with three pilot classes that launched during October 2026. “The pilot courses provide an opportunity to make sure the class experience works well before the full institution rollout,” explains Cody Starling, MCC’s Dean of Information Technology. During the pilot period, students and faculty are providing feedback, which will further assist in a smooth transition. The launch date for the new LMS is spring semester 2027.
“Our implementation is ahead of schedule,” explains Starling. “We were in the first cohort of community colleges to implement the product, and it has gone extremely well which is a testament to the implementation team and faculty who have worked very hard.”
