MCC is pleased to announce its new SGA President for the 2025-226 academic year. His name is Ricky Merida Nieves and he is a senior at Montgomery County Early College.

As SGA president, Ricky represents the MCC student body in monthly Board of Trustee meetings. He also coordinates with campus ambassadors and staff in Student Services to come up with creative ways to engage students and bring visibility to exciting aspects of campus life.
Ricky attended Candor Elementary, East Middle School and began his high school journey as a freshman in the Early College, inspired by a cousin who was in the institution’s first cohort.
“I was fortunate to be admitted into the Early College,” admits Ricky. “Looking back now, I can see I wasted a lot of time and gave very little effort in middle school. I am so glad they saw something in me!”
Ricky would highly recommend the Early College experience to other students. “The school gives us a lot of support and individualized attention, and I’ve been very successful here.” In addition to the low student-teacher ratio at the Early College, Ricky also credits his peers and older students with mentoring him and helping him develop good study skills. “This is a competitive place, but in a good way. It is difficult at times, but we support one another and encourage each other to be the best students we can be.”
In addition to being a full-time student, Ricky is an employee at E.E. Vuncannon Farming Supply Store in Ellerbe, where he has worked in various capacities for three years.
Ricky expects to graduate in May 2026 with his high school diploma and an Associate in Science degree, and hopes to attend North Carolina State University in Raleigh as a student in the Mechanical Engineering Program. With support and encouragement from Early College faculty, Ricky is navigating the scholarship landscape as he prepares to make his transition to university life.
In his role as SGA president, Ricky is supported by MCC’s Student Services team, in addition to fellow Student Ambassadors De’Asia Little, Ma’Kailah Little, Haillary Jimenez Perez, and Nevaeh Privett.
