Michael Butcher, a Facility Maintenance Technology student at Montgomery Community College, has been awarded one of three Samuel M. Taylor Memorial Life Sciences Scholarships for 2025-2026. This prestigious educational scholarship will allow him to develop the industry-critical skills required to succeed in the biotechnology and life sciences fields.

Mr. Art Furr, MCC’s Electrical Systems Technology/Industrial Systems Technology Department Chair, alerted Michael to the scholarship opportunity. “Mr. Furr told me about it in class one day, it sounded like a perfect match, and he helped to proofread my application before I submitted it,” explains Michael.
The Samuel M. Taylor Memorial Life Sciences Scholarship was established by NCLifeSci in memory of the late Samuel M. Taylor, a long-time leader in the life sciences sector and advocate for biotechnology education across North Carolina. It provides financial assistance to community college students like Michael, who are preparing for careers in life sciences and related fields. A committee of representatives from NCLifeSci, the System Office, and the Foundation selects recipients each year.
As a Facility Maintenance Technology student, Butcher is developing skills in a variety of construction areas, including plumbing, welding and carpentry. “My favorite discipline is carpentry,” said Michael. “I like the precision involved. The exacting nature of carpentry requires focus and detail, both strong suits for me.” Michael plans to use his Facility Maintenance Technology skills in laboratory environments, supporting North Carolina scientists by improving efficiency and safety in research facilities.
North Carolina is home to one of the world’s largest life sciences clusters, and the industry continues to expand, creating jobs with competitive salaries and strong career paths.
