MCC Forestry Students Conduct Prescribed Burn
Published on Monday, September 8th, 2025
In early September, MCC Forestry students conducted a 16-acre prescribed burn in a forest stand set to be naturally regenerated with pine seedlings from existing overstory trees. The purpose of the burn was to remove leftover logging debris and reduce competing vegetation, creating the perfect conditions for new pine seedlings to take root.

Forest Management Technology students conduct at least two prescribed burns every year as part of the Forest Protection Course. Prescribed burns are carefully planned and only carried out under very specific weather conditions, such as the right wind speed, humidity, and temperature. These conditions ensure that the fire stays controlled within the designated area and burns at the desired intensity. Careful attention is also given to wind direction so that smoke disperses safely, minimizing impacts on nearby communities, roads, and other smoke-sensitive areas.
Beyond preparing the site for regeneration, prescribed fire can reduce wildfire hazard by reducing fuels, improve habitat for some wildlife species, reduce competition, enhance appearance and improve access.
