Geographic Information Systems is a certificate option under the Forest Management Technology program. It is a computer based method used to collect, store, manage, analyze, model, and present geographic data. GIS gives users the ability to integrate and analyze geographic data for mapping, planning and decision-making.

The GIS curriculum is designed to train individuals to become grounded in GIS technology to make informed use of existing GIS applications, and to gain skills necessary to construct new applications utilizing data capture, analysis, modeling and cartographic representation.

This program covers the foundations of GIS and spatial analysis, including cartographic and statistical methods using hands-on lab exercises and course projects with ArcGIS and open source GIS software.

GIS data is becoming an integral component in business, healthcare, state and local government, insurance, law enforcement, and many other industries. Successful graduates can utilize the certificate to advance a career, to enhance skills, or to use in a current job setting.
