Financial Aid Regulations

  1. Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP):
  2. Students receiving financial aid must comply with the minimum satisfactory academic progress requirements. Please refer to the MCC website for a detailed description of the SAP.
  3. Non-curriculum Classes:
  4. Financial aid should not be used to pay for classes outside a student’s declared major or minor. Students registering for and receiving aid for classes not in a declared curriculum will be held liable for any overpayment that results from such an action. It is the student’s responsibility to register for courses in their program(s) of study.
  5. Repeat Classes:
  6. Repeating a course is allowed when the student fails to earn a grade of “C” or better. However, repeating a course counts as another attempt: the attempted hours count each time the course is taken; the completed hours count once. Repeating courses may be detrimental to a student’s SAP.
  7. Remedial Classes:
  8. Pre-requisite classes in Math and English are counted in a student’s SAP, both in the 67% completion ratio and the 100 hours maximum time limit. However, if a student reaches the 100 semester hour limit and has not earned his or her degree, MCC reserves the option to evaluate the impact of remedial courses upon the student’s record. If removing the remedial classes from the student’s record would allow the student to graduate within the 100 hour limit, MCC will continue to award financial aid to the student equal to the number of remedials previously attempted.
  9. Remedial Class Limit:
  10. Remedial classes do not apply toward the SAP calculation. Students may receive aid for 30 remedial credit hours only.
  11. Adding a Minor:
  12. Students may declare a minor. However, while the hours attempted in both programs count toward determining the SAP (completion rate and GPA), the student must be able to complete their primary course of study within the maximum timeframe. If at any point it becomes clear that the student cannot complete their primary course of study within the 150% maximum timeframe, they become ineligible for aid. Adding a minor does not increase the maximum timeframe. The maximum timeframe is 150% of the primary course of study.
  13. Changing Majors/Adding Minors:
  14. A student may not change curriculums or programs of study more than three times and still receive financial aid. A student must earn a diploma or degree in one of the three attempted programs before s/he may receive aid for another course of study. Once a student has reached financial aid suspension status, they must meet with the Director of Counseling Services for counseling and to complete an interest inventory prior to changing majors. In addition, a student may only receive aid for up to two one-year diplomas or two associate degrees. After a student has completed two degrees, two diplomas, or one degree and one diploma, s/he is no longer eligible to receive financial aid at MCC.
  15. Withdrawing / Dropping Classes:
  16. Classes dropped during the official drop/add period are not calculated in the SAP policy. However, classes dropped after the official drop/add period are calculated. (Refer to school calendar for drop/add deadlines) Dropping classes after the official drop/add period results in the student receiving a grade of “W”. Withdrawals and grades of “F” or “AU” count as hours attempted. If a student changes curriculums, all the courses attempted previously that apply toward the new major transfer and are used in determining SAP. Students are advised not to drop classes after the official drop/add period ends.
  17. Huskins Bill / Dual Enrolled:
  18. All courses attempted in the field of study are used in calculating the SAP.
  19. Returning Students:
  20. Students returning to school after an absence of one or more semesters are still bound by their prior academic records. Students who fail to meet the standards outlined in the SAP are ineligible for aid. Excepting an approved appeal request, the only manner by which a student may regain eligibility is by completing classes at their own expense and achieving the minimum SAP requirements.
  21. Appeal Process:
  22. All students are eligible to appeal their financial aid suspension status in writing to the Financial Aid Department. Appeals are granted only in documented cases of serious illness, death of an immediate family member, natural disaster, or other traumatic episode.
