Welcome to Montgomery Community College's NRA Short Term Courses. Our courses are taught by nationally and internationally known gunsmiths, armorers and craftsmen who share their expertise in courses ranging from basic to advanced techniques. Most courses combine a hands-on and lecture format and range from three days to two weeks in length.
The college requires all students to complete and sign a registration form to take any class. You can access a registration form online by clicking the Registration Form icon on the right hand side of this page under the menu. Custom 1911 45 Accurizing – Bob Marvel (FILLED - CLASS CLOSED) April 22 – May 03, 2013 (No Weekends) Cost $175 plus $60 supply fee This course focuses on extracting the maximum precision, reliability, and shootability from the 1911. Instruction includes slide tightening and fitting an oversized match barrel, troubleshooting, headspacing, lug engagement, barrel crowning, sight installation, reliability, and trigger work. Students will build a complete, custom 1911 during this course.
*Ultimate Bolt Action Rifle Accuracy –James Messer (FILLED - CLASS CLOSED) May 06 – 10, 2013 Cost $360 (9 student limit) Learn precision action work, threading, chambering, and other accurizing techniques from a top benchrest gunsmith and competitor. Improve performance of bolt action rifles from muzzle to breech. The primary objectives for this course are action trueing, threading and chambering. Additionally, bedding methods will also be covered. A working knowledge of lathe operation is required for this course.
Alternate Caliber AR-15 Class – Len Fagan (FILLED - CLASS CLOSED) May 13 – 17, 2013 Cost $120 plus $60 supply fee The core areas of concentration in this course are the 6.5 Grendel and .300 Blackout caliber conversions. Students will learn the steps necessary to achieve a professional rifle build, from conception through final assembly to the range. Reamers, gauges, and other necessary tools will be provided. A working knowledge of lathe operation is required for this course.
Class 3 101 – Ronnie Beal May 13 - 17, 2013 Cost $120 plus $60 supply fee This class will provide an introduction to Class 3 firearms. Federal laws and ATF regulations along with necessary paperwork will be thoroughly examined in the first portion of the course. The next portion of the course will deal with suppressor design and the mechanics of common fully automatic firearms. The final portion of the course will include some shooting of Class 3 devices on a range.
Welding for Gunsmiths - Tom Beverly May 13 - 17, 2013 Cost $120 plus $60 supply fee This course will provide an introduction to TIG welding equipment and the proper applications and types of welds used by gunsmiths. The instructor is both an experienced welder and gunsmith.
Alternate Caliber AR-15 – Jacob Porter May 20 – 24, 2013 Cost $120 plus $60 supply fee This course will concentrate primarily on the 6.5 Grendel and .300 Blackout caliber conversions. Students will learn the steps necessary to achieve a professional rifle build, from conception through final assembly to the range. Reamers, gauges and other necessary tools will be provided. A working knowledge of metal lathe use is required for this course.
Gunstock Checkering - Tim Carrick June 03 - 07, 2013 Cost $120 plus $60 supply fee This course focuses on layout and hand-cutting of a standard point pattern stock checkering. Topics include layout and hand-cutting of a fleur-de-lis pattern, recutting of existing patterns, and stamped checkering.
M1A/M1 Garand Accurizing – Isaac McCaskill June 10 – 21, 2013 (No Weekends) Cost $175 plus $60 supply fee This two-week course provides all the information necessary to build a national match grade M1A or M1 Garand. Re-barreling, trigger jobs, stock bedding, as well as gas system and sight modifications will be examined.

Single Action Ruger Revolver – Hamilton Bowen (FILLED - CLASS CLOSED) July 22 – 26, 2013 Cost $175 plus $60 supply fee Basic tuning theory, troubleshooting, simple custom modifications and related metal working techniques will be demonstrated and performed. This course is geared to popular Ruger single-action revolvers but Colt and others are welcomed. While the course is geared toward revolvers for field use, some alterations for cowboy shoots will be discussed. Smith & Wesson Double Action Revolver – Mark Dye (FILLED - CLASS CLOSED) July 22 – 26, 2013 Cost $120 plus $60 supply fee This one-week course provides an overview of custom work commonly performed on Smith and Wesson K, L, and N frame revolvers. The main focus of the course is geared toward action tuning of these revolvers for both competition and field use. Also included in the course is instruction on barrel installation, shortening, and various sight installations. Advanced topics such as caliber conversions and metal finishing theory will be discussed as time permits.
Bolt Action Accurizing – Thomas Marshall (New, lower price!) July 22 – August 02, 2013 (No Weekends) Cost $175 plus $60 supply fee (12 student limit) During this two-week course, students will accurize a bolt action rifle from start to finish. The rifles will be shot at the beginning of the class to establish an accuracy baseline. Rifles will then be subjected to a full battery of accuracy work. Threading, chambering, bedding, crowning, and other aspects of rifle accuracy will be examined and performed. The rifles will then be shot for accuracy at the conclusion of the class to evaluate the work performed. A working knowledge of lathe operation is required for this class.
Metal Engraving – Jesse Houser (FILLED - CLASS CLOSED) July 29 – August 7, 2013 Cost $175 plus $60 supply fee This course is designed for beginning, intermediate and advanced engravers using traditional hammer and chisel, bruin and power assist tools. This ten- day course is designed to be taught at an individual level for all students. Students are required to bring their own tools, supplies, and projects.
Metal Refinishing – Ryan Flynn July 29 – August 2, 2013 Cost $120 plus $60 supply fee This course covers both basic and some advanced principles of metal refinishing and bluing. Students will cover correct polishing and surface prep techniques which will include sandblasting with different medias and the tools used. Emphasis will be placed on hot salt bluing. If time allows, demonstrations in torch casing, rust bluing and nitre bluing will be given. Students will also discuss the newer types of finishes available to the industry today.
Gunstock Fit, Finish, and Alterations –Tim Carrick July 29 – August 02, 2013 Cost $120 plus $60 supply fee This course will expose students to concepts of gunstock fit. Topics such as length of pull, pitch, drop, and cast will be covered. Strategies for measuring and altering these dimensions will be explained. Stock bending to adjust case will be demonstrated. Methods for re-finishing of factory stick will be covered, as well as installation of recoil pads and other stock accessories.
1911 Customization – Mike Watkins August 12 - 16, 2013 Cost $120 plus $60 supply fee This one-week course will cover all aspects of building a 1911 pistol from a bare frame and slide to include the fitting of all components. Students will be expected to know how to assemble and disassemble a 1911 pistol. Precision filing and fitting of parts will be a required skill. Machine shop skills will be required for machining slides for sight installation and frames for ramped barrels.
Building a Modern Two Piece Shotgun Stock – John Davis August 19 - 30, 2013 Cost $175 plus $60 supply fee The course is designed to teach students the basic stockmaking techniques required to build a shotgun stock from a stock blank. Students will provide a Remington 1100 or 870 shotgun for restocking. Discussion of tools required, proper use of tools, tool sharpening techniques, and stick layout will be some of the topics covered during the shaping and fitting of the stock. The student will start the process with an oversized, semi-inletted buttstock and forend and will fit them to the shotgun metal. Final shaping will be determined by accepted standards and individual measurements taken during the stock layout. |
Basic Knife Making - Travis Daniel August 22-25, 2013 (Th-Su) OR October 3-6, 2013 (Th-Su) Cost: $375 Learn knife-making by designing and making a knife under the guidance of the instructor. Each student will grind, heat and finish a knife using the stock removal method. This class is for beginners to intermediates who want to perfect their knife-making talents.
Introduction to Tactical Knife Making - Barry and Phillip Jones September 5-8, 2013 (Th-Su) OR October 10-13, 2013 (Th-Su) Cost $375 Learn fixed-blade design using the basic principles and methods of knife construction, including how to grind and heat treat knife blades, as well as fitting and finishing handles.
Custom Folding Knives - Ed Van Hoy September 19-22, 2013 (Th-Su) Cost $375 Design and craft a custom liner-lock folding knife. The instructor will show the basic principles and methods of construction required to make a folding knife. Design, machine work, drilling, tapping, grinding the blade and finishing will be covered. Each student will complete a knife using both machine shop and common hand tools. |
