This workshop includes three National Wildland Coordination Group (NWCG) certified training courses. It provides an excellent base of information for individuals who plan to pursue natural resource management especially within prescribed fire or wildfire disciplines. The exposure to wildland fire behavior, suppression and human behaviors facilitates the establishment of a firm foundation on which to build. All three courses provide an introduction to wildland fire concepts, practices and relevant behavioral issues. The workshop is planned to be scheduled this fall in October or November 2016. Please stay tuned for the date setting. This 5 day training will be held at the College in Room 105, Blair Auditorium and includes a field exercise.

Workshop activities will focus on the use of models such as the Fire Emission Production Simulator (FEPS), CONSUME, DIGITAL PHOTOSERIES, VSMOKE and HYSPLIT. VSMOKE and HYSPLIT are atmospheric dispersion models that have been evaluated for use under the NC's Smoke Management Program. The use of each model and its limitations will be discussed. HYSPLIT will be demonstrated to workshop participants. There will be several exercises designed for participants to establish and reinforce a working knowledge of the use of FEPS and HYSPLIT. These tools can assist in making Go/No-Go decisions for prescribed fire or to assess smoke impacts from prescribed fires or wildland fire. Workshop participants are encouraged to bring spatial data sets and/ or information for one project that they are currently working. This project will be used as part of their training.
