Taxidermy Program

Mission:

The goal of the Taxidermy Program is to provide students with the technical, business, and artistic skills needed to successfully hold employment in the taxidermy industry.

2007-2008 Assessment Outcomes & Use of Results

Division Goal 3: Provide facilities that meet the current and future instructional programming needs.

Program Goal: Provide students with a viable, state-of-the-art option to traditional tanning methods.

Objectives: Students will successfully pressure tan one specimen

Action Plan:

  1. Continue instructor tanner training.
  2. Teach technique to class.
  3. Evaluate tanned hide.

Assessment Strategy: Instructors will inspect specimens

Assessment Outcomes: Due to Head Instructor illness, goal unmet.

Use of Results: Goal continued to May 2009

Division Goal 3: Provide facilities that meet the current and future instructional programming needs.

Program Goal: Integrate European (skull mounts) into mammal curriculum

Objectives: Students will be able to successfully preserve mammal skulls by the most modern techniques.

Action Plan: Obtain outdoor cooker, teach to students, evaluate completed projects

Assessment Strategy: Instructors will evaluate projects

Assessment Outcomes: Due to Head Instructor illness, goal unmet.

Use of Results: Goal continued to May 2009

Division Goal 3: Provide facilities that meet the current and future instructional programming needs.

Program Goal: Expand bird instruction to two summer semesters (meet state hourly requirements for NCCC certification, adds needed time to bird instruction)

Objectives:

  1. Create an equal time frame with mammal and fish instruction for full certification.
  2. Provide needed instruction time for growth of bird taxidermy

Action Plan:

  1. Find out if expansion is possible (discuss with Student Services and VP of Instruction).
  2. Consult advisory council.
  3. Discuss with students.
  4. Develop two semester curriculum and integrate.

Assessment Strategy: Evaluate data from discussions, apply or disregard

Assessment Outcomes: Feasibility study and student input prove goal cannot be met.

Use of Results: Goal dropped

 


Taxidermy Program

Institutional Effectiveness Plan 2008-2009

College Goal: Develop and implement instructional programs and services,both traditional and distance learning offerings, consistent with the assessed needs of the constituent groups in the College's service area and with state and national standards, including training and retraining of the workforce.

Division Goal: Respond to service area economic trends by providing continued training and/or upgrading for current workforce needs and by pursuing new programming in potential expansion areas.

Program Goal: Begin a required one-on-one instructional session with each student to mount a deer. Students who have received this type session in the past, have stated it is more valuable time than watching the instructor do five deer in front of the entire class.

Objectives:

  1. Create a better understanding/technique of the mounting process.
  2. Provide time for asking/answering individual student’s questions.
  3. Create better deer mounts.

Action Plan: Schedule personal instruction time during Thursday office hours.

Person(s) Responsible: Head taxidermy instructor and students.

Anticipated Date for Achieving Objective: End of spring 2009

Assessment Strategy: Evaluate student mounts.

Budget Needs: Existing budget should cover.

Assessment Outcomes: Will be completed in May 2009

Use of Results: Will be completed in May 2009

Division Goal:  Provide facilities, staffing, and services that support educational program delivery. 

Program Goal: : Re-sequence the night taxidermy fall and spring schedule from current A, B configuration (example: Mammal 102A fall, Mammal 102B spring) to A, A first year B, B second year (example: Fish 101A fall, Mammal 101A spring 1st year & Fish 102B fall, Mammal 102B 2nd year).

Objectives:

  1. Reduce student burn out.
  2. End 32 solid weeks of same instruction.
  3. Make it easier for students to obtain specimens.
  4. Match night instruction schedule to day instruction schedule.

Action Plan:  Discuss with MCC Director of Enrollment Management, Vice President of Instruction, and Taxidermy Head Instructor to establish legal and logistical possibilities.
