Business Technologies Department

Office Administration Program: Legal Concentration  

Mission:

The Office Administration Legal Concentration Prepares individuals for entry-level positions in legal or government-related offices and provides professional development for the currently employed.

2007-2008 Assessment Outcomes & Use of Results  

Division Goal 2:  Meet training needs for current and expanded employment opportunities of the service area as a result of changing workforce demographics.

Program Goal: Investigate opportunities to reach our service community with information about the OST Legal option

Objectives: Increase enrollment of OST Legal program

Action Plan: Recruit at area high schools as well as mass mailings promoting program.

Assessment Strategy: Compare enrollment numbers from same time last year.

Assessment Outcomes: Recruiting at area high schools completed.  Mass mailing completed. Increased enrollment from 5 in 2006-2007 to 12 for 2007-2008. This represents a 58% increase in program enrollment.

Use of Results: Plan and improve recruitment strategies.

Division Goal 2: Meet training needs for current and expanded employment opportunities of the service area as a result of changing workforce demographics.

Program Goal: Incorporate additional distance education opportunities in the OST Legal program

Objectives: Provide additional educational options to non-traditional students.

Action Plan: Introduce Legal Office Procedures (OST 156) in an on-line format.

Assessment Strategy: Increased enrollment.

Assessment Outcomes: Legal Office Procedures (OST 156) was offered in an on-line format for year 2007-08.

Use of Results: Continue to up-date course content and monitor effectiveness of the on-line course format.

Division Goal 1: Maintain a high level of instruction and/or job performance by providing access to continuing professional development activities.

Program Goal: Explore opportunities for advanced credentialing in the legal field

Objectives: Obtain updated information in the field of legal office procedures.

Action Plan: Investigate the possibility of working toward a paralegal degree.

Assessment Strategy: Knowledge gained will be put into use in the classroom.

Assessment Outcomes: Obtained program information for Paralegal Technology program offered by Western Piedmont Community College.

Use of Results: Apply for enrollment in Fall 2008 coursework.

Office Administration Program: Legal Concentration

College Goal: Develop and implement instructional programs and services, both traditional and distance learning offerings, consistent with the assessed needs of the constituent groups in the College's service area and with state and national standards, including training and retraining of the workforce.

Division Goal: Respond to service area economic trends by providing continued training and/or upgrading for current workforce needs and by pursuing new programming in potential expansion areas.

Program Goal:  Promote confidence and expanded training for OST Legal students.

Objectives: Improve student skills in preparation for the workplace.

Action Plan: Investigate the possibility of incorporating a Co-Op component in the OST/OST Legal program.

Anticipated Date for Achieving Objective: Spring 2009

Assessment Strategy: Students will achieve a B or better in the OST capstone course OST 289.

Budget Needs: None at this time.

Assessment Outcomes: Will be completed in May 2009

Use of Results: Will be completed in May 2009

College Goal: Develop and implement instructional programs and services, both traditional and distance learning offerings, consistent with the assessed needs of the constituent groups in the College's service area and with state and national standards, including training and retraining of the workforce.

Program Goal:  Evaluate and improve, where needed, the OST Legal program to maintain high standards and quality of instruction.

Objectives: Improve student skills in preparation for the work place.

Action Plan:

  1. Investigate the possibility of adding an ethics class to the OST Legal program.
  2. Investigate the possibility of changing/updating the OST 156 textbook.

Assessment Strategy: Student evaluations and improved test scores.

College Goal: Develop and implement instructional programs and services, both traditional and distance learning offerings, consistent with the assessed needs of the constituent groups in the College's service area and with state and national standards, including training and retraining of the workforce.

Division Goal: Provide facilities, staffing, and services that support educational program delivery.

Program Goal:  Increase public awareness of OST Legal program.

Objectives:  Increase OST Legal program enrollment by 2%.

Action Plan:  Find new approaches and venues for recruitment and advertising.
