Commercial Technologies Department

Gunsmithing Program

Mission:

To provide quality educational opportunities needed to operate machine tools related to the Gunsmithing trade, refurbish metal and wood as applicable to firearms, to diagnose Malfunctions for repair and accomplish more complex custom Gunsmithing tasks.

2007-2008 Assessment Outcomes & Use of Results

Division Goal 1: Maintain a high level of instruction by providing access to continuing professional development activities.

Program Goal: Gunsmithing instructors will enhance their effectiveness and preparedness through professional development activities to enhance student learning, achievement, and employability.

Objectives:

  • Instructor and students will attend the SHOT SHOW in Las Vegas to learn about the changing trends in the firearms industry
  • Students will attend the SHOT SHOW in Las Vegas to learn about career path options within such a huge industry.

Action Plan:
2/08 Program Head and students will attend the SHOT SHOW
2/08 Program Head will attend the American Pistolsmiths Guild meeting in Las Vegas held during the SHOT SHOW.

Assessment Strategy: Verification that instructor and students attended the SHOT SHOW and have students fill out a survey on what they learned about changing trends and career choices at the SHOT SHOW.

Assessment Outcomes:

  • The President, Program Head and about 20 currently enrolled Gunsmithing Students attended SHOT SHOW 2008. The students spent four days at the show talking with industry experts and viewing the newest firearms designs. A survey was distributed to twenty students that attended the SHOT SHOW. To the question: attending the 2008 SHOT SHOW helped me prepare for the job market in Gunsmithing and the Firearms Industry. All 20 responded strongly agreed or somewhat agreed. To the question: attending the 2008 SHOT SHOW helped me keep informed of the changing trends in the firearms industry. All 20 responded strongly agree or somewhat agree. Surveys are on file in the Gunsmithing area.
  • The Program Head and the President of the MCC Gunsmithing Society attended the American Pistolsmith Guild Meeting on 2/1/08 in Las Vegas NV.

Use of Results: Will continue as an educational goal for 2208-2009

Division Goal 2: Meet training needs for expanded employment opportunities of the service area as a result of changing workforce demographics.

Program Goal:

  • Maintain machine tools that operate within industry standards
  • Supply students with the needed supplies and tooling to complete their projects.

Objectives:

  • Request the needed funds to replace two South Bend Lathes that no longer operate within industry standards
  • Request the needed budget to supply students with supplies and tooling needed to   successfully complete their assigned projects.

Action Plan:

  • Replace two South Bend Lathes
  • Replace worn tooling
  • Replace used supplies

Assessment Strategy: Verify the new equipment and tooling was installed and/or replaced and students are successfully using it to complete their assigned projects. 

Assessment Outcomes: Replaced one of the South Bend Lathes 12/07 and are currently in the process of replacing the second lathe by 6/08

Use of Results: Goal completed and will not use as an educational goal for  08-09

Division Goal 2: Meet training needs for expanded employment opportunities of the service area as a result of changing workforce demographics.

Program Goal: Provide enhanced student learning by upgrading the presentation technology in the Gunsmithing class rooms.

Objectives: Replace the old Elmo for one that has more detail and add a projector to the classroom so students can see the gun parts more clearly.

Action Plan: Work with Dean of Educational Technology to acquire an Elmo and projectors that are being aged out of the tiered classrooms

Assessment Strategy: Elmo and projectors installed and being used regularly to enhance instruction.

Assessment Outcomes: Elmo and projectors were installed and the Gunsmithing faculty are using them to enhance instruction.

Use of Results: Will continue to use the Elmo and projectors in the Gunsmithing labs, but will not use as an educational goal for 2008-2009 school year.

Division Goal 2: Meet training needs for expanded employment opportunities of the service area as a result of changing workforce demographics.

Program Goal: Improve metal finishing instruction in the Gunsmithing Program

Objectives: To introduce students during the Gunmetal Refinishing course to Alternative Spray on Metal Finishes.

Action Plan:

  • Purchase a baking oven suitable for spray on finishes
  • Update spray booth in Continuing Education’s multi purpose shop
  • Implement teaching spray on finishes during the metal finishing semester

Assessment Strategy: Purchasing oven and renovation of spray booth and students will complete projects using spray on finishes.

Assessment Outcomes: Purchased the baking oven, but still have not received funding to renovate the spray booth.

Use of Results: Educational Goal was not completed due to budget limitations. Will continue as an educational goal for 2008-2009.

Gunsmithing Program

Institutional Effectiveness Plan 2008-2009 

College Goal: Provide an environment that supports employing and retaining a quality faculty and staff and promotes enhance student learning, achievement, and development.

Division Goal: Maintain a high level of instruction by providing access to continuing professional development activities.

Program Goal: Gunsmithing instructors will enhance their effectiveness and preparedness through professional development activities to enhance student learning, achievement, and employability.

Objectives:

  1. Instructor and students will attend the SHOT SHOW in Orlando, Florida to learn about the changing trends in the firearms industry
  2. Students will attend the SHOT SHOW in Orlando, Florida to learn about career path options within such a huge industry.
  3. Gunsmithing instructors will attend the NCCCS Instructors conference and attend relevant seminar for vocational education.

Action Plan:
10/08 Gunsmithing instructors will attend the NCCCS Instructors Conference
1/09 Program Head and students will attend the SHOT SHOW
1/09 Program Head will attend the American Pistolsmiths Guild meeting in Orlando held during the SHOT SHOW.

Budget Needs to Accomplish Objective: Will request funding for out of state travel to attend the SHOT SHOW in Orlando, Florida. Will request funding for the Instructor’s Conference.

College Goal: Utilize technology to provide information services that support quality, personalized instruction.

Division Goal: Provide facilities, staffing, and services that support educational program delivery.

Program Goal:

  1. Maintain machine tools that operate within industry standards
  2. Supply students with the needed supplies and tooling to complete their projects.

Objectives:

  1. Request the needed funds to replace 1960’s Herig Surface Grinder that is non-operational.
  2. Request the needed budget to supply students with supplies and tooling needed to successfully complete their assigned projects.

Action Plan:

  1. Replace one Herig Surface Grinder
  2. Replace worn tooling
  3. Replace used supplies
