Health/Public Services Technology Department

Criminal Justice Program

Mission:

To prepare students for employment in the Criminal Justice field, students will be provided with a fundamental knowledge of the local, state, and federal criminal justice areas

2008-2009 Assessment Outcomes & Use of Results

Program Goal: Program head and other criminal justice faculty will remain up-to-date in the field of Criminal Justice. Program head/Associate dean will sharpen administrative and leadership skills.

Objectives:

  1. Program head and criminal justice faculty will present most current material in classroom.
  2. Program head/Associate dean will provide effective leadership to Health and Public Services Department.

Action Plan:

  1. Program head and faculty will attend conferences, seminars, and other professional development opportunities to obtain new information to be presented in the classroom.
  2. Program head/Associate dean will attend conference, seminars, and professional development opportunities to increase leadership skills.

Assessment Strategy:

  1. Documentation for attended workshops, seminars, etc.
  2. Information disseminated to students.
  3. Associate Dean evaluations

Assessment Outcomes: Program head and full time faculty attended Director’s Conference sponsored by NC Criminal Justice Training and Standards. Program head secured placed in doctoral program to advance leadership skills. Program head attended NCCCS conference and implemented within classroom. Full time faculty member participated in workshops offered on campus. Activities limited due to restricted state budget.

Use of Results: Continue to participate in professional development opportunities as appropriate.

Program Goal: Provide online and/or hybrid courses in format designed best to meet students’ needs.

Objectives: Online student retention will increase by 25% from results in 2007-2008

Action Plan:

  1. Program head, criminal justice faculty, and Dean of Institutional Development will examine courses for content, arrangement, etc. and implement appropriate changes.
  2. Former students will be surveyed concerning their experience with criminal justice online courses

Assessment Strategy:

  1. Completed surveys by former online learners
  2. Changes to Blackboard courses
  3. Increased retention of online learners

Assessment Outcomes: Online enrollment rebounded in 08-09 academic year. Dean of Educational Technology provided positive evaluations of online Criminal Justice courses.

Use of Results: Continue to monitor online course retention while responding to feedback from student evaluations and suggestions/comments by Dean of Educational Technology.

Program Goal: Provide information to the public concerning Criminal Justice program.

Objectives: Increase enrollment of the Criminal Justice program by 30%.

Action Plan:

  1. Conduct presentations at local law enforcement and correctional agencies.
  2. Make regular contact with local high school guidance counselors
  3. Participate in community events advertising Criminal Justice program when feasible.

Assessment Strategy: Enrollment numbers

Assessment Outcomes: Enrollment increased by 14%. Full time faculty maintained regular contact with local law enforcement agencies and attended police chiefs’ meeting. Program head conducted recruitment activities at Southern Correctional Institute. Program head and full time faculty conducted MCC tours for Montgomery County students.

Use of Results: Continue to nurture relationships with community agencies and promote Criminal Justice program.

Criminal Justice Program

Institutional Effectiveness Plan 2009-2010

College Goal: Provide facilities for student learning that capitalizes on state-of-the-art instructional applications.

Division Goal: Provide facilities, staffing, and services that support educational program delivery.

Program Goal: To allow students to engage in hands-on activities within each Criminal Justice class.

Objectives: Students will have opportunity to become familiar with daily tools utilized in the criminal justice field.

Action Plan:

  1. Purchase three digital cameras for evidence collection.
  2. Purchase field drug testing kits used upon immediate confiscation of illegal substances.
  3. Purchase 10 Crime Scene Investigation kits.
  4. Collaborate with Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences to incorporate class time for DNA lectures/lab utilizing the biology instructor and laboratory.

Anticipated Date for Achieving Objective: Ongoing

Assessment Strategy: Items purchased and implemented in classroom instruction. Classes scheduled in biology lab.

Budget Needs:

  1. $900 for cameras
  2. $400 for NIK Instructa-Pac
  3. $1000 for CSI kits
  4. Regular state budget

Assessment Outcomes: To be completed in May 2010

Use of Results: To be completed in May 2010

College Goal: Provide an environment that supports employing and retaining a quality faculty and staff and promotes enhanced student learning, achievement, and development.

Division Goal: Provide access to and guidance in professional development opportunities to strengthen instructional delivery and to prepare for accreditation initiatives.

Program Goal: For faculty to possess most current information and disseminate such information to students.

Objectives: Faculty to engage in professional development directly related to criminal justice.

Action Plan:

  1. Obtain class schedule from North Carolina Justice Academy
  2. Enroll in courses that directly relate to information which will be presented in criminal justice curriculum
