Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) is designed to give students essential skills required for entry-level employment as law enforcement officers with state, county, or municipal governments, or with private enterprise.
This program utilizes topics and methods of instruction mandated by the State Commission. General subjects include criminal, juvenile, civil, traffic, and alcoholic beverage laws; investigative, patrol, custody, and court procedures; emergency responses; and ethics and community relations.
Students must successfully complete and pass all units of study which include the certification examination mandated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina Sheriff's Education and Training Standards Commission to receive a certificate.
Program Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the Basic Law Enforcement Training program, the graduate should be able to:
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of the criminal, traffic, civil, alcoholic beverage, and juvenile laws of the State of North Carolina
- Exhibit an understanding of the laws governing proper use of law enforcement defensive tactics, firearm techniques, basic precision driving, and emergency first aid as a first responder
- Conduct criminal investigations and traffic crash investigations
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of a law enforcement officer’s interaction with victims, citizens, special needs subjects, and juveniles
- Demonstrate proper law enforcement patrol techniques, felony vehicle stop procedures, and building searches
- Exhibit appropriate skills necessary for case preparation, courtroom testimony, and courtroom demeanor
- Possess entry level skills of civil process and custody procedures
- Display the needed skills to handle crisis situations and domestic violence confrontations
- Communicate effectively through oral and written formats
- Exhibit professionalism and ethical conduct
